There is a short window every October in Lincoln when the trees stop easing into fall and simply go all in, with maples turning ember red, cottonwoods glowing gold, and the late afternoon light softening everything it touches. That is exactly when we met the Mutchie family for their fall session, and the timing could not have been more perfect.
Fall Family Photos in Lincoln, Nebraska
Petite sessions are thirty minutes long, set at one beautiful, pre-selected location, and designed as a quick photo refresh for the years you don’t need a full signature session. They are also one of my favorite ways to see familiar faces again. Getting to photograph a family we already know means the warm-up is mostly skipped, and we get right to the good stuff: easy laughs, real snuggles, and the little in-between moments that end up being everyone’s favorites.
The Mutchies showed up in the coziest fall palette: a soft chambray button-up and khakis for dad, a cream turtleneck sweater with a deep emerald polka-dot midi skirt for mom, a rust tiered dress with a blush cardigan and white tights for their daughter, and a burgundy button-up with khakis for their son. Layered against the copper oaks and that glowing late-day backlight, every color felt rich, warm, and perfectly intentional.
From there it was all about letting them be themselves. Big squeezy family hugs, a sneaky kiss between mom and dad while the kids ran circles around them, and an all-out leaf toss that had both kids laughing with their arms straight up in the air. We kept things lighthearted and unhurried, and in thirty minutes we had a full gallery of candid, joyful family portraits that feel exactly like this season of their life.
Why We Love Peak Fall Color
Fall in Nebraska is fleeting, which is part of what makes it so magical. Peak color brings rich, layered backdrops of red, orange, and gold, glowing backlight through the branches, and crunchy leaves underfoot that practically beg kids to toss them in the air. It is cozy, nostalgic, and impossibly warm, and it makes for the kind of family photos that look beautiful framed above a fireplace or tucked into a holiday card.
Thank you, Mutchie family, for spending a golden evening with me and trusting us with your family photos.
